Two French Requiems
Sat 13 Nov 2010 19:30 at Guildford Cathedral
Fauré: Requiem
Duruflé: Requiem
Royal Philharmonic Orchestra
Claire Doran ‑ Music of Life Foundation student ‑ soprano     Paul Reeves ‑ baritone
conductor: James Morgan
tickets: £23, £19 (conc £5)
box office: The Electric Theatre 01483 444789 (10:30-17:00 M-S)
This concert brings together settings of the Requiem Mass by two French composers. Fauré's Requiem is one of the most loved works in the choral repertoire, reflective yet uplifting , and has been regularly performed since its composition in 1890. Fauré said of his own work “Everything I managed to entertain by way of religious illusion I put into my Requiem, which moreover is dominated from beginning to end by a very human feeling of faith in eternal rest”.
Duruflé's contemplative, yet intensely emotional Requiem was commissioned in 1947 by the French music publisher, Durand and is written in memory of the composer's father. At the time of commission, Duruflé was working on an organ suite using themes from Gregorian chants. He incorporated his sketches for that work into the Requiem, which uses many themes from the Gregorian "Mass for the Dead". Nearly all the thematic material in the work comes from chant and yet Duruflé finds a way to create a sound world that is unmistakably his - meditative, moving and at times searingly intense.

Interval drinks will be available in the Refectory (these can be ordered in advance at the desk in the Narthex)

Rutter, Chilcott and Elgar
Sat 12 Mar 2011 19:30 at Guildford Cathedral
Elgar: Serenade for strings (E Minor op. 20)
Chilcott: Canticles of Light
Rutter: Magnificat
London Gala Orchestra
conductor: James Morgan
tickets: £25, £19, £17, (conc £5)
box office: The Electric Theatre 01483 444789 (10:30-17:00 M-S)
This concert pairs John Rutter's much loved Magnificat with Bob Chilcott's Canticles of Light, first commissioned 10 years ago. John Rutter needs little introduction to contemporary audiences, while Bob Chilcott is fast making a name for himself as a skilful and inspired choral composer, with an intuitive understanding of setting music for voices. The programme is completed by another British composer, Sir Edward Elgar, and his seminal Serenade for Strings.

Interval drinks will be available in the Refectory (these can be ordered in advance at the desk in the Narthex)
